2 3/4" Models - Golding Fiber Tools

The 2¾ inch Golding RingSpindles™ have a 2¾” whorl and a walnut shaft measuring 5/16″ x 8 ¾”. They are a versatile spindle of medium weight, ranging from 1.3 oz to 1.75 oz. There are many different 2 3/4″ spindles to choose from: Gemwood Series, Solid Ebony, Rainbow Spindle, Solid Bird’s Eye Maple, Celtic Sheep, Celtic Cross, Art Nouveau Filigree (Silver and Gold), Sunbeam, Silver Celtic Inset, Gothic Antiqued Cross, Celtic Ring #2, Solid Kingwood, and 12 handpainted Zodiac spindles.

Kingwood is a classic furniture wood, almost exclusively used for inlays on very fine furniture. It was the most expensive wood in general use for furniture making in the seventeenth century, at which time it was known as princes wood. Occasionally it is used in the solid for small items and turned work, including parts of billiard cues. It is brownish-purple with many fine darker stripes and occasional irregular swirls. The wood is very dense and hard and can be brought to a spectacular finish. It turns well but due to its density and hardness it can be difficult to work with hand tools. It also has a tendency to blunt tools due to its abrasive properties. It is available only in small sizes (it is yielded by a smallish tree, Dalbergia cearensis, restricted to a small area in Brazil). Other woods yielded by the same genus are cocobolo, rosewood, African blackwood, Bombay blackwood and tulipwood. IT IS A RARE BUT NON-THREATENED SPECIES.
